Lava Diaz's films (such as Florentina Hubaldo, CTE, 12. NH, lullaby to the painful mystery, 16. NH), one of the dozens of Asian cinema, have long been an important point in the program of subsequent editions of New Horizons. The hero of his latest work is Horacia, a woman wrongly thrown into prison for 30 years. Just before leaving the factory, he learns who actually committed the crime. For three decades the world has changed for the worse, however, Horacia, with stoic calm, devises a plan of revenge on the former lover. Diaz throws her heroine in the wild and unknown Philippines world of the late 1990s, in which absolute violence and constant kidnapping of citizens are on the agenda. The brutal reality forces Horace and many of her like to set up masks, to be someone else. The director continually asks the heroes to analyze the moral choices and take part in the never-ending battle for their own souls. Lava Diaza's latest film was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
